When I heard about this on the news, my heart fell into my shoes! Of course all of my government conspiracy flags went up, lol, and I immediately started to look into what could I do naturally to prevent or treat this. My first thought of course was booting the immune system. But my research has found some troubling information (called a “cytokine storm“)about how a healthy immune system could somehow be a bad thing in regards to certain types of the flu. (I wont go into that in this post because it is not a simple explanation and I don’t fully understand it myself.) The good news is I have found something that is simple to help us with this pandemic. Black Elderberry Syrup, with the brand name Sambucol. I have actually used this for the flu before, about 1 1/2 years ago and it was amazing. Now this stuff is expensive, and my sources are saying that the formula has changed from the original so Maybe it is not as effective anymore, but don’t fret, I have found a recipe to make it yourself at home for just a fraction of the cost! For the recipe click on the link below.

You will need:

Fresh or Frozen Elderberries

Instructions for dried Elderberries will follow

A small amount of water

Raw honey

you can use regular honey, but raw is always best

A jelly bag, cheesecloth, or any fine mesh to strain with

Sterilized glass jars

Crush your Elderberries in a heavy stainless steel of enamelware pot. Add just enough water to barely cover the bottom of the pan to keep the berries from sticking. Heat gently over low heat, stirring and crushing until it is no more than 150F. Make sure they are very well crushed. Strain through your cheesecloth (or whatever) into a sterilized metal or glass container. Add your honey at a ratio of 2:1 honey to juice. Stir until dissolved. Pour into your sterilized jars. This will not be hot enough to seal as in canning, but as long as you have sterilized everything it will be fine. Label your jars and store in a cool, dry place.

Take 1-2 tbs every 2-4 hours at the FIRST SIGN OF ILLNESS! Early treatment is key with almost every ailment.

AS A PREVENTATIVE- take 1-2 tbs two times a day

Of course you should always be sure to wash your hands frequently. Avoid crowded places and big cities if possible and do not touch your face with your hands.

If you cannot make your own homemade syrup, I would still use the Sambucol or another black elderberry syrup. You can find these at your local healthfood store, order them online and my local CVS has Sambucol.

For dried berries: put 1 cup of dehydrated berries in a quart jar, pour boiling water over them covering at least 2-3 “. Let set for 48 hours in fridge. Strain and squeeze all the juice out, use a press if you have it. Then you just use the juice like the recipe says!

Off I go to find me some Elderberries to make my syrup!
